Facebook groups have for a long time been all the rage in the blogging world (in case you haven't noticed) and everyone wants to know how to grow a Facebook group when you have no members and no audience.
While many people know the allure of creating a group, many have absolutely no idea how to get people to join a Facebook group without dropping money on advertising fees or sounding super spammy.
Is that you? Are you interested but not quite sure how to get people to join your Facebook group?
Don't worry. Not too long ago, I was in the same boat.
It was late December 2016 and I had recently joined a bunch of blogging groups. Suddenly, I thought to myself, “Hey, why don’t I start one of these?”
And then, just like that, Blogger Insights was born (this group is currently archived after an awesome long run and over 10,000 members!)
I'm not even kidding. It happened just like that. I have a text thread with one of my close friends to prove it, too:
That was January 5, 2017.
At the time, I had no idea what sort of work went in to launching a Facebook group, and I sure as hell and no idea how to grow a Facebook group, either. I went into it blindly.
But I was determined to make it work, nonetheless.
I wanted to start a new community of bloggers. I wanted to engage with people on a personal level. I wanted to provide a safe community to bloggers (both new and not-so-new) to ask questions, grow and learn.
Yes, I know there are other communities of bloggers out there, but just because something already exists doesn’t mean another version of it can’t also do well.
So I got to work… and in less than 2.5 months, Blogger Insights grew to over 500 members, and that eventually turned into several thousand and then 10k+!
I don’t claim to have some sort of magical potion. Learning how to grow a Facebook group is something that I picked up through trial and error. But 0 to 500+ members in 2.5 months is pretty remarkable (at least in my book).
Here are 10 ways to get people to join your Facebook group without being spammy (this is exactly what I did!).
How to Grow a Facebook Group from Nothing to Something in Less Than 3 months
1. Join Sumo (for free)
Ever see a website that has that fancy bar floating on the top or bottom of the screen advertising something exciting? Yeah, that’s probably from SumoMe (actually Sumo… they just changed their name).
I added this bar for free - I do not pay for the premium membership. While I’m all for investing in tools, I wasn’t about to pay $30 per month just to integrate Sumo with ConvertKit.
So, here’s how it works. Whenever anyone landed on my site, they would see the bar floating at the bottom of the screen – doesn’t matter what page they entered on.
When they enter their email in the bar, a red notification pops up in the corner of my screen. I check it every day to see if there are any subscribers. Then, I manually enter those subscribers into ConvertKit – where they’ll be tagged accordingly and receive an email with a link to join the Facebook group.
Now obviously this isn't a long term sustainable strategy to be manually adding people from one app to another.
BUT - It was a great jumpstart in the beginning!
2. Add a link to the Facebook Group in your top-level menu
I can’t say how successful this is as I’m not tracking menu clicks, but I wanted to include a link to the Facebook community in my menu. It’s an important part of the website so it fits. Menu items are some of the most highly clicked buttons on your site, so it has potential to be a huge driving force to group growth.

3. Feature the Facebook Group on your home page
I added this section to my site the day I created the Facebook group. Now, anytime anyone lands on my homepage, they see the blogging group right away. I don’t go into crazy details about the group, but instead provide a quick one-line description so they can decide for themselves if they are interested. The button takes them right to the group where they can request to join.
4. Advertise the group in your email signature
This isn’t fancy advertising but it works. I send boatloads of emails per day to bloggers from my Gmail account, so why not take the opportunity to advertise the group to them? It costs me nothing, it’s not invasive, and it took no time at all to setup. Easy peasy.
5. Mention the group in nearly all emails you send to your list
Whenever anyone subscribes to a freebie and opts into my list, they automatically are subscribed to an email funnel (a sequence of several emails that nurture them with relevant content). Many of those emails contain a link to my Facebook group.
6. Share the group on promo threads
I’m a member of quite a few groups for bloggers on Facebook. Many of those groups have weekly promo threads that are free-for-all threads on which you can share anything you’d like. Many people share blog posts or links to their freebies. Often, I share a link to my Facebook group.
Now, it’s important to note that I do not do this for every group. Some groups have an across the board rules that forbids sharing Facebook groups. In those groups, I’d never cross the line and share the group anyway.
However, other groups don’t have that rule stated and, when appropriate, I do take advantage of sharing my group within the promo thread. It always results in a decent number of new members.
7. Share the group on social media threads
Again, as a member of many Facebook, I take advantage of the social media threads as much as possible. In some groups, there are days that are specifically dedicated to Facebook.

I always make sure to share my group here (Chantel has given her explicit permission to share groups).
On general social media days (days that any social media account is allowed) I share my group, as well. However, I always make sure the group doesn’t have a rule that forbids Facebook Group promotion.
8. Pin a post on your Facebook Business Page referring people to your group
Again, nothing fancy here, just simple use of functionality that is already built into these platforms.
Essentially, I shared the Facebook group to my regular business Facebook page. Then I pinned that post. Now anytime someone follows me on Facebook, the first thing they see is that I also have a Facebook Group!
On social media days for groups that don’t allow links to a Facebook group, I always share my Facebook page and my member count always, without fail increases.
You can also take the same approach with Twitter.
9. Include a link to your group in Pinterest Group Board descriptions
I don’t really have a way to measure the success of this but I included a link to the Facebook group in the description of one of my group boards on Pinterest.
10. Create pins that link to your group
Pins don't have to be just for blog posts and affiliate links. I created a straightforward pin advertising my Facebook group and then set it free into Pinterest land where it was clicked on and saved to various group boards.
So, there you have it. Ten simple strategies to get your Facebook group out into the world and growing. Like I said, no magic potion or anything. But ever since I launched the group, it's been growing at a significant rate of about 200 members per month on average. At one point, I gained 100 members in a matter of 3.5 days.
Learning how to get people to join your Facebook group is a matter of trial and error. Yes, every niche is different - but, generally speaking, when you're dedicated to something, it will happen. If you put the time into grow your group, you'll find that it eventually will grow.
