Overview

Looking for an informative (but quick and to the point) Bluehost review?  Read on for more information. But first, some background.  Bluehost was started in 2003 by Matt Heaton.  Some of you may know him as the guy who started those awesome (ha) hosting sites like 50megs (my first site ever was on 50megs... memories). Bluehost quickly moved it's way to the top as one of the most popular web hosting sites out there, with bargain pricing.

Fast forward to 2009.  Controversy struck with the introduction of CPU throttling as Bluehost's new feature.  Through CPU throttling, Bluehost begain to reduce CPU usage of those sites using too much of the server's resources at any given time.  If you fell victim to CPU throttling, well, consider your site toast.  They'd freeze your site and put it in site prison... however you want to think about it.  Needless to say, people weren't too thrilled. Don't worry, though.  Since then, Matt Heaton has stepped down as CEO.  New leadership swooped in. The company underwent massive changes.  And, what do you know, they're back to the top.

Today, Bluehost powers over 2 million websites world wide (a shockingly high number) and they offer a great service with a number of different pricing options and packages. But enough with the boring stuff.  Let's dive into the actual Bluehost review.

Pros

  • Bargain pricing
  • 24/7 access to support teams
  • Free domain name with web hosting purchase
  • Great server performance

Cons

  • Customer Service isn't the speediest
  • Migrating services for existing sites are an additional charge

The Verdict

Bluehost is an incredibly popular name in the web hosting world.  I'd be shocked if you haven't heard it before, honestly. So, after some digging and research, here's what you need to know in an exclusive Bluehost Review.  Bluehost (volume wise) is by far one of the top hosting companies in the world and it's a great choice for many people.

The short story is that it's a reliable host. You'll get what you pay for with Bluehost shared web hosting.  The long story... well, keep reading for that!

Features

Customer Service

24/7 Live Chat

24/7 Phone Support

24/7 Ticketing Support

Alright - full disclosure here.  Bluehost doesn't get 5 stars on customer service. They don't have the quickest response times and the first person you speak to won't always be the last.  However, they do know what they're doing and there's a good chance you'll never have to call on the support team. We're a fan of the support structure, though. 24/7 support (phone, chat, and ticketing) should be an industry standard by now (given that it's the 21st century) so it's just best practice that Bluehost provides this to all paying customers, which they do.

Security

Nowadays, web security is a huge concern. Hackers too smart for their own good can tap into any unprotected system and wreak havoc.  Thankfully, Bluehost takes the necessary precautions to prevent such a headache.

They practice account isolation to make sure your risk of being hurt by a site gone sour is minimal if anything.  They're mostly open source meaning they don't rely on any vendors to upgrade their software or technology. They do everything in-house, and they're on top of their upgrades.

Uptime

For bargain-priced shared hosting, Bluehost's uptime stats are decent.  They aren't perfect, but they're too be expected.  On average, their uptime is about 99.3% (not as great is SiteGround but not bad either).

For clarity:  Uptime is the percentage of time your site operates as to be expected. Ideally, you'll achieve as close to 100% uptime as possible.  So, Bluehost's stats are fairly decent.

Control Panel

The Bluehost Control Panel is straightforward and very intuitive. All of your go-to items are there for you, with instructions and resources right at your fingertips.

It's easy to manage your email, monitor web performance, keep tabs on your account, error messages, and more.

Speed

The industry average time for loading is 4,7 seconds.  Your site will load up with a speed of 1067 ms with Bluehost. Not terrible. Could be better.

Data Backups

Bluehost initiates automatic backups of your account every day, week, and month.  Your site can be restored by you, or you can choose to take advantage of the special service Bluehost offers (pro version), that has the capability to restore particular files in your database.

Pricing, Plans, Options

Bluehost provides 3 different options for web hosting packages.

bluehost pricing

Basic = this basic plan is a great option for people who plan on starting their first site.  You don't need unlimited space for a starter site.  One domain name is included, and just about everything else you need for your starter site is packaged into the basic plan.

Plus = The ideal choice for people who need a bit more space for their site. A great happy medium between the three plan options.

Prime = The big shot plan.  Great for people who really do need those add-ons included into their package.  Also perfect for people who want to make sure their site backup is included in the base rate.

Bluehost secret reveal:   The basic plan will go up in monthly price if you only purchase 12 month hosting.  Your best bet is to pay for as long as your wallet allows, so that your monthly rate stays low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Bluehost offer a student discount?

A:  Rumor has it (it's not actually a rumor, it's true.. that just has a nice ring to it), there is a student cloud coming soon to Bluehost.  Don't have the details yet, but all will be revealed soon. In the meantime, you can use the education plan on Bluehost with a valid .edu email address (see: https://www.bluehost.com/hosting/education/students) or click here to learn more.

Q: Is it easy to move an existing WordPress site.

A: Installing WordPress on Bluehost is super easy (literally in one click).  Moving an existing WordPress site is a bit more technical, but all WP sites have an import/export feature making it as simple as can be.

Q: Do they offer Linux and Windows hosting?

A: Yes to linux, no to windows.

Conclusion

For people who need a ton of space and plan to host many sites on one web host, perhaps look elsewhere.  You'll be fine with Bluehost, but this might not be the best solution for you.

For bloggers and first time website "starters", Bluehost is a legitimate option for you.  You'll experience quick startup, ease of use, and quality uptime. It's cheap and effective.  Can't really ask for more than that.  Click the link below to explore the Bluehost site. Link will open in a new window.

  • Hello,

Bluehost has so far been a good web host for me as i am using their shares hosting as well as VPS, and I am happy with both of them.

Although, there might have been some downtime’s in recent months, but that was due to the fact i hosted so many of website son shared hosting, most of those websites are of my clients, so I can understand the downtime, but overall, I am pretty happy with Bluehost Hosting.

So, I would highly recommend Bluehost to all those, who want good support & reliability.

    Regards,
    Julie Schrier
